William Sandeson (1913-2003) was an editorial cartoonist for the Fort Wayne, Indiana The News Sentinel for 37 years. Titled "GATECRASHER" shows the newly elected president Kennedy receiving an award "Inflationary Steel Price Rise Award "from George Meany while Arthur Goldberg offers JFK the "Hold the Line" award. It was Kennedy's first major domestic win. VG, 14" x 19-1/2", c1962. The Steelworkers' bargaining over a contract with the nation's steel companies was getting nowhere. JFK didn't want a rerun of the 4-month steel strike of 1959 under GOP President Eisenhower. His Labor Secretary Arthur Goldberg, a longtime union counsel, mediated the talks. The two sides reached agreement on March 31.
