CALHOUN, John Caldwell (1782-1850) was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina who held many important federal positions. Document Signed, "J.C. Calhoun", as Secretary of War, 1pp., 8-1/2" x 9-1/2", November 6, 1818, certifying that John Coats, late a Private in the Army of the Revolution is entitled to a pension "at the rate of eight dollars per month." The document retains its paper seal, signature bold and dark, presented in a modern frame with a Calhoun engraving.
