MASON, John Young (1799-1859) was a United States Representative from Virginia, the 16th and 18th United States Secretary of the Navy, the 18th Attorney General of the United States, United States Minister to France and a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Autograph Letter Signed "J. Mason" 2pp. quarto, January 18, 1842, with integral leaf addressed to Francis Mallory, Member of Congress from Virginia, pertaining to an Edmund Lloyd and recommending him a commission in the Marine Corps. In part: "...his education is good and his habits correct & his desposment gentlemanly amicable...maternal side, great grandson of Richard Henry Lee, and on the paternal, great nephew of Genl. Harry Lee..." Fine condition.
