1886 mounted albumen photograph, 16” x 13-3/8,” containing two albumen photos, 12-1/4” x 10,” from the funeral of Ulysses S. Grant in 1885. This comes from a rare photographic album entitled, "Seven Mile Funeral Cortege of Genl. Grant in New York Aug. 8, 1885." The first image is titled, "First Floral Decoration of the Tomb of General Grant" with the accompanying text that reads, "May 31, 1886. View of Tomb and Floral Decorations. Floral Shields of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts on the right; Floral Shield of Michigan on the left. Sentry on the left of the tomb; beyond in foreground eight figures; five figures on the right; in the background, trees and crowd." The reverse side is titled, "Brigade of United States Sailors" with the accompanying text that reads, "Formed by the Sailors taken from the various Men-of-War in the Harbor of New York combined, making a force Three Thousand strong, and packing Fifth Avenue a mile deep. The sailors in this picture carried small guns and made a stirring scene, and enabled our citizens for the first time to understand how our Naval Commanders often land U.S. Sailors and Marines, and fight pitched battles successfully, the same as our Regular Army, when necessity requires, in foreign countries.
