STEVENSON II, Adlai (1900-1965) was an American lawyer, politician, and diplomat, noted for his intellectual demeanor, eloquent public speaking, and promotion of progressive causes in the Democratic Party. Defeated twice for presidenty by Dwight Eisenhower, he lost the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination to John F. Kennedy. Typed Letter Signed “Adlai E. Stevenson” 1pp. small quarto, July 26, 1960, addressed to Elizabeth Bowers, in part “In the past few weeks I have been the beneficiary of more love and loyalty than ever before in my life. Having twice been honored by my party, I did not feel it was proper for me to seek the nomination again...” Very good condition...plus; Typed Letter Signed “Adlai Stevenson” on his US Rep to the UN letterhead, in part: “I had hoped to be able to thank you sooner than this for your kindness in writing me about the proposal that I run for the Senate in 1962. I was profoundly flattered and gratified by Mayor Daley’s suggestion, I have decided that I can be most useful where I am...” Fine condition...plus; GOLDWATER, Barry (1909-1998) was an American politician, businessman, and author who was a five-term United States Senator from Arizona (1953–65, 1969–87) and the Republican Party's nominee for President of the United States in the 1964 election. Typed Letter Signed, “Barry Goldwater” 1pp. quarto, May 7, 1965, thanking Patty Gallucci for sending songs to him. Fine condition. (3 items)
