[Andrew Johnson]. Brady Studio portrait Carte de Visite of all seven members of the Impeachment committee which oversaw the proceedings of the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. 4” x 2/5”. A fine portrait with four of the members seated in front of an additional three standing. Imprint at left states “Managers of the House of Representatives of the Impeachment of Andrew Johnson”. Brady’s backstamp “M.B. Brady & Co.’s National Photographic Portrait Gallery on verso which also bears the original autographs of all members of the committee which was comprised of the following individuals: John A. Logan (1826 – 1886). Union general during the Civil War, Illinois Congressman. Thaddeus Stevens (1792 – 1868). Anti-slavery advocate, Pennsylvania Congressman. Banjamin A. Butler (1818 – 1893). Union general during the Civil War, Masschusetts Congressman. James F. Wilson (1828 – 1895). Congressman and Senator from Iowa. John A. Bingham (1815 – 1900). Congressman from Ohio, one of the three prosecutors during the Lincoln assassination trial. Thomas Williams (1806 – 1872) Congressman from Pennsylvania. George S. Boutwell (1873 – 1877) Congressman and Senator from Massachusetts, Secretary of the Treasury under Grant, Governor of Massachusetts. On May 16, 1868, the final vote taken in the Senate failed to impeach President Johnson by falling one vote short of the necessary two-thirds majority necessary for passage. These signatures are not facsimilies…they are the orginal autographs of all members of the House impeachment committee and as such this is a rare opportunity to acquire such an item signed by the complete committee.
