A complete and authentic issue of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated, August 30, 1862, 16pp., disbound, near fine. Front page full engraving shows “Gen. Robert M’Cook Murdered By Rebel Guerillas ...” From the interior a strong horizontal engraving, “First and Last - Dress Review of the 1st Regiment South Carolina (Negro) Volunteers, on Hilton Head, S.C., Under Col. Fessenden, USA., June 25th.” The report on a separate page advises that the regiment was being disbanded by General Hunter, who had repeatedly requested pay for these soldiers and was repeatedly denied. There were approximately 300 Negro soldiers in this regiment. The First South Carolina Volunteers was composed of escaped slaves from South Carolina and Florida. There had been previous attempts to form black units in New Orleans and Kansas, but they were not officially recognized.
