Confederate Document, 9” x 7”, signed by governor by “John Letcher” being a commision issued January 1, 1861 commissioning one Charles E. Waddell to the rank of 2nd Lieutentant of Light Infantry in the 4th Battalion of the 15th Brigade of the 1st Division of the VIRGINIA MILITIA. The document retains its green seal, old fold lines, VG. Waddell would later enlist, 4/19/1861 and was commissioned into "A" Co. VA 12th Infantry and finally being paroled 5/12/1865 Raleigh, NC. On the reverse the Mayor of the city of Petersburg certifies the commission January 8, 1861. Included are many pages of background history including the location of Waddell’s grave in Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg, a photo of his gravestone and copies of several excerpts from Waddell’s diary at Gettysburg.
