Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), Camp Paxton, June 3, 1863, in part: "We have received orders to cook three day's rations and be ready to march at any moment. Conjecture is ripe in camp as to where we are going…my opinion is we go towards Richmond. The Yankees have left the other side of the river and are moving toward Aquia Creek…J. W. Middleton. [Then his aunt chastises him]…Thursday night, I have just heard that you are safe…by Mr. Sam Campbell…if you knew the uneasiness we feel…you would write if it was only a few words…I think [it] quite hard of this neglect though you think otherwise. I hope you will write when it is very convenient…I will be glad if it [is] not too much to ask you to write. I remain your aunt as ever. E. R. Middleton." The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else both overall VG
