Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), Culpeper Court House, June 9, 1863, in part: "After 4 days of marching we arrived here last night. We were then ordered to cook 4 day's rations…the artillery is firing rapidly [battle of Brandy Station] this morning down towards Fredericksburg. I expect the Federals are trying to cross over…that way. Everything is quiet in our front. We are about 4 miles from the court house on the road leading to Luray…the general impression [is] that we are going to the valley. I only hope it is true…this cannonading forebodes some move of the enemy…we will be detained here until we can see what is going on…the troops are so mixed up…you can hardly find anything…the ideas of going to the valley has kept me up better than I would otherwise eve been. It seems rather like going home…I like to see the mountains and hope they will keep us in sight of them and between them. This is a beautiful morning…one that I could enjoy if I was at home…direct to Culpeper, 27 Regt. Stonewall Brigade…J. W. Middleton…". VG
