Rare Confederate POW letter written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907, Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade) while being held as a prisoner at Fort McHenry, Baltimore after being wounded and captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Typical one page letter, (12mo.), Fort McHenry, Feb, 28, 1865 carried south through the lines by a certain G. W. Bryant of Richmond who addressed a cover and enclosed this letter to Middleton's aunt, Mrs. Ellen R. Middleton of Lexington, Va. Middleton's letter, reads, in part: "Received yours of Nov. 17. Answered it. I am well and getting along comfortably. Would be very happy to see you, but the course I have pursued will prevent my doing so at present. Do not be uneasy about us. I hope all things will be well yet…as ever yours, J. W. M. By kindness of G. W. Byrant. N. B. for further particulars address G. W. Bryant, Richmond, Va., care of G. W. Pearson." Also included is the letters original stamped transmittal cover with a somewhat weak March 5, 1865 Richmond postmark. Docketing on the cover reads, "J. W. M. prisoner of war at Fort McHenry."
