A rare Confederate recruiting broadside, 12" x 16 3/8", boldly entitled: "NOTICE TO CONSCRIPTS, In The Sixth Congressional District." issued at "Headquarters-Enrolling Office, 6th Cong. Dist., Columbia, [S. C.], Sept. 1, 1863." In the broadside Chief Enrolling Officer, Major E. C. McLure enumerates the requirements for enrollment into Confederate service and they read, in small part: "I. All persons in…the Districts of York, Chester, Fairfield, Richland, Sumter, Kershaw and Clarendon) who are between the ages of 18 and 45 years and who are liable to enrollment, will promptly report…to the Enrolling Officers of their respective districts. II. This Notice includes all male white persons…except the following classes…persons already in Confederate service…persons who…hold Confederate exemptions…all persons who reported as "volunteers" prior to the 20th August…III. All persons liable to this order, who fail to report promptly, will be enrolled as conscripts…and will be at once proceeded against as Deserters. IV. Officers in command of Militia Beats will…complete rolls of all male white persons in their respective Beats…E. C. McLURE, Maj. & Chief Enrolling Officer...". President of the local medical examining board, Surgeon F. Olin Dannelly, then announces the "APPOINTMENTS OF MEDICAL BOARD." He then declares, in part: "The undersigned, President of the Examining Board…hereby gives notice that he has appointed the following days for the examination of Conscripts…in pursuance of the foregoing order: Columbia, September 14th, 15th and 16th…Camden…29th and 30th…Sumter, October 2d and 3d…all persons must be enrolled before they can be examined by the Surgeons. F. OLIN DANNELLY, Surgeon P. A. C. S…". On the verso is a period docket that seems to indicate that this broadside was once used as evidence in helping recover bounty pay due the families of those who answered this call. Unfortunately, the exact context of the docket was lost when that corner of the broadside was torn away. It should also be noted that the docket even contained a regimental designation in it, but sadly that unit's number has also been lost to time. The broadside's upper and lower margins were once tattered, but now the broadside has been professionally cleaned, de-acidified and restored. Overall near fine
