A rare war-date Confederate notary public compensation claim brought by the Harrisberger farm of Rockingham Co., Virginia for damages caused by the 7th Virginia Cavalry (Col. Turner Ashby's old command) for camping in their fields, 1p. 4to., manuscript, June 1, 1863, reading, in small part: "The Confederate States of America. H. H. B. & J. M. C. Harrisberger…[on May 30, 1863] 150 rails burnt by the 7th Regiment of Va. Cavalry…Dr. $10.50…390 horses pastured upon our land for one day @ 25cts per horse…$97.50…Jacob B. Nichols, Stepehn M. Marrisburger & Wm. A. Maupin citizens of…Rockingham…hereby certify that we all know the property of…Harrisberger and the condition of said property and garss…used by the 7th Regimnet of Virginia Cavalry and rails destroyed by them. We…do say that the sum of $108.00…will be a just compensation…". Signed by the above named citizens and also by Notary Public Charles Lewis. Light soiling, else VG
