A great postwar biography of Confederate Cavalryman and South Carolina statesman Wade Hampton, 8pp. 8vo., written by a devote Southerner from South Carolina, ca. 1900, apparently written in hopes of making Hampton's death date a day of remembrance on South Carolina's calendar, reading, in part: "Wade Hampton was born in Charleston, S. C. March 28, 1818…within sound of the chimes of old Saint Michael's bells…had the sturdy virtue to ride, to shoot and to speak the truth…he was educated at S. C. University and served in the legislature…here he opposed secession, but when the ordnance [of] war passed, entered the Confederate service as a private…raised the Hampton Legion…at the first battle of Manassas (Bull Run)…he received a wound in the head. Company D 1st S. C. Cavalry [was] from this place of which W. A. Walker was captain…belonged to the Hampton Legion. Was again wounded at Seven Pines. [On] July 28, 1862 Hampton was transferred to the cavalry of Virginia as Brigadier general. By the death of Major General J. E. B. Stewart (sic) on May 12, [1864] Hampton became commander of the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia…then 46 years of age…Hampton was first in Lee's army and surrendered with Johnston, April 26, 1865 near Goldsboro, N. C. In 1878 he was elected Governor of S. C…in 1893 he was appointed U. S. Commissioner of railroads…he lived until his death April 11, 1902…". VG
