War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written, by Musician Samuel Fleming, Co. A, 78th Penn. Vols., "Camp Nevin, [Harden Co., Kentucky], Oct. 31, 1861", in part: "…we left Camp Orr in the 14th…I did not like it there very well. The water wasn't good and then it was so dirty. We used cloth tent…the whole brigade left on the 18th on board six boats for Louisville. It was a pleasant trip…the boats was too ouch crowded…we landed at Louisville Tuesday evening the 22nd. We stayed all night on the boat. The next morning we marched one mile south of the city and pitched our tents…we marched to the depot and there was breakfast prepared for us. They could not get cars enough that day so our regt had to wait until the next morning when we bid adieu to Louisville…we came 62 miles south of the city to this place…we are encamped on a most beautiful farm. There is some first rate corn around here. We use rails for wood. It looks pretty hard but it cant be helped. There is about 25 thousand troops encamped about here. The Rebels is in considerable [force] at Green River and at Bowling Green. We was ordered [to] have everything ready to pick up last night. They expected an attack but they did not come. I am looking for a fight some of these days. The boys are all well but George McGaughey…address to Col. Serwell's 78 Regt Penn. Vol. via Louisville…care of Capt. Cumming…S. Fleming." Addressed to James C. Carnahan who later enlisted as drummer in the 78th but died of disease shortly after the battle of Murfreesboro. The original "DUE 3" transmittal cover is included.
