A rare mid-19th century young ladies' letter, 4pp. 8vo., on patriotic American Flag stationery, written by Louisa Youngs, Little Falls, N. Y., May 28, 1861, to her brother George (future Pvt. George Youngs 126th New York), concerning her efforts at finding work outside of house work for the family, in part: "…I did not expect to find Syracuse as large a city as it was and Rome was much larger than I thought…I could see four large flags from the depot. When I reached Little Falls…I did not find anyone at the depot, but I did not have much trouble in finding Em for the factory is in sight of the depot…I found the house surrounded on all sides by high rocks, covered in some places with green trees…there is springs enough here to supply all the village with water…I went to Lover's Leap…remember the story about the Indians Lovers how they both leaped off a precipice well the very place is here at Little Falls…I have seen it. It is perfectly perpendicular but it was not quite as awful as I expected…well I commenced…to weave rug carpet the next day after I got here. I have woven about 13 yards since…but I don't think I shall weave anymore. I think I shall go in the mill to learn to weave there. I have made arrangements so that I will have no board…while learning…I am sorry to say that I shall not be able to send any money very soon. I hope to get work in the factory after I learn to weave then I hope to send some money…Louisa." Also included is the original transmittal cover with Emily Haber's name upon it. No doubt, Emily Haber is the "Em" referred to in this letter. Both VG.
