War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Thomas J. Bond, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Vols., "Olympian Springs", Oct. 12, [1861], in part: "…we are under orders to hold ourselves in readiness to move our quarters to some other locality…we got on the cars and traveled all night to Paris [Kentucky]. We rested about two hours and started on our way refreshed…they was a good dinner awaiting for us…we went into it heals over head and got plenty and had some to spare for our next days rations. The next day we lightened our wagons and put our knapsacks inane hauled them…we was glad of that. We marched the next day…15 miles to our camp…on our way we took one sesesh prisoner and kept him all night…swore him in next morning and let him go. That was the way they do with all prisoners. The reason we took him [was] for aiding some rebels to get out of our way and the major took him prisoner…camped in the fair grounds…it was the finest fair grounds [I] ever saw…Paris is a secessionist town. We camped in the fair grounds one day and we packed our wagons and strapped our knapsacks on our backs …and started on our three day march…we marched…to the town of Middletown. All along the route, at every house, we met a crowd of people at the gaits. The negrous was surprised at the music and followed our regiment. We pitched our tents at the last named place…we was provided with a good dinner…at the place of Mr. Olden…direct your letters to Olympian Springs, Bath Co., Ky…Thomas J. Bond."
