War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Thomas J. Bond, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Vols., "Camp Woods, Hart Co.," KY, Dec. 21, [1861], in part: "…we left Elizabethtown…last Monday and started for Green River. There was 3 brigades marching at one time…it was the nicest site that I [ever] saw. There was about 10,000 men. We camped about 7 miles from the river…there is about 40,000 men here and about 100 pieces of cannon…there was a battery of 6 pieces arrived yesterday…the same night Buckner's Cavalry made a charge upon 400 dutch of McCook's Brigade. They stood till the enemy came up…they picked them off with their bayonets. They was 12 of our men killed…they said there was ninety of their men killed …Buckner has 30,000 men but there was a deserter said that they was but 19,000 and 15 pieces of cannon and that will not be a Bite a piece for our men…we are 40 miles from Bowling Green where Buckner is entrenched but we are getting soldiers here as fast as they can run them in…Thomas J.
