A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Odin, Marion Co. Ill., Oct. 16, [1862], in part: "…we left Columbus the same day that you did…got to Cincinnati…we had to lay there in the depot all night…started on the Mississippi and Ohio railroad for Cairo…we have traveled nearly all the way after night soI have not seen much of the country. Tell Uncle Will that I saw his old camp ground at North Bend. The tents were all standing yet…Lieut. Jacobs went back to Mt. Vernon the day we left Columbus. We are under the charge of Sargent Dunbery. He is a first rate fellow and fares the same as we do…Odin is a small place near the center of the state…it is a very large prairie as large as a floor you can see fifteen miles off. The county seat is six miles off west of here and you can see it as plain as you can see Homer from our house…there are about sixty soldiers here…waiting for the train. We have two fiddlers and one guitar. The boys have been dancing all morning. The general of our division passed through here this morning. He said all was quiet around Bolivar and no signs of a fight…Henry…". The original transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
