A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Bolivar, Tenn., Oct. 20, [1862], in part: "…this is our second day in camp…we left Columbus the same day you left…we got to Cairo…the sergeant took us to a place called the soldiers home. The hardest place I ever saw or want to see. It was a long room with cots on each side and was occupied by all kinds of men, secesh and Union, some sick and some wounded and all lousy…what a breakfast it was nothing but some bread and stinking meat, but we had to eat it…we took the boat for Columbus Ky. 20 miles down the Mississippi…it is built on a flat between a high bluff and the river. It is strongly fortified. Every hill is planted with cannon. We went up to the fortifications with an officer who showed us everything…the place is full of shot and shell left there by the Rebels…we also saw the infernal machines that were planted by the Rebels…we also had to stay in the soldiers home but it was a different place from Cairo. It was three story house scrubbed out and clean as it could be. There we got our supper and breakfast which was good fresh bread and beef, onions and coffee…we started again south by railroad. The country was level all the way and nearly all woods. The land looked like as if it was very good. It is very heavily timbered…every hour we would see where a train had been burnt by the rebels…this road is fortified the whole way through…the cars run off the track at Jackson where we changed cars and took it two hours…it took two hours to get them on again. There are fifteen thousand men here. The place is fortified all round…let me know about the drafted men…direct…care Capt. Roger, Co. E, 20th Reg. O. V. I…Henry…I like this place very well. It is far better than Camp Columbus…there is no prospect of a fight here now…Henry H. Fulton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
