A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], LaGrange, Tenn., Nov. 8, 1862, in part: "…the fourth we left Bolivar…we are now camped at LaGrange on the Memphis and Charleston Railroad 24 miles south of Bolivar and four from the Mississippi line. We left Bolivar with the intention of moving to Holly Springs to attack Price [corps commander under Earl Van Doren] . The army is under the command of Gen. Grant. He left Bolivar with the troops and made a junction with the troops from Corinth at LaGrange. There are fifty thousand men here now…perhaps we will leave before night…the railroad…has been tore up by the Rebels. The cars have not run over this road for four months. They are now running within nine miles of here. They are repairing the road as fast as they can. The cars will run this far in a few days and we will then start forward…our Reg has marched 80 miles within the last two weeks. Marching is the hardest work I ever done…had not been here more than fifteen minutes till our company was ordered out on picket and more grumbling I never heard in my life…we started out from the picket line to find something to eat. There were five men to a post and we would leave two and three would go out to scout…we loaded our guns and started in all directions…I went with Ashton…and had not gone far till I shot a fat hog…show of the boys went to a house and come back with their arms full of books and fancy articles of all kinds. After they had got all they wanted they set the house on fire and burnt it down…it was owned by a captain in the Southern army. He was a young married man and his wife was at Chattanooga. The place was left in the charge of the negroes. You have no idea of the destruction that has been carried on by this army. There is a Reg of cavalry with us [that was] raised in East Tenn. [they] burn everything that will burn. They say that everything hay had was burned by the Rebels but the burning will now be stopped. Gen. Grant has issued an order that every man caught burning houses or fences shall be shot…Henry." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG
