War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on very rare patriotic "Our Flag is Still There" stationery by Musician Samuel Fleming, Co. A, 78th Penn. Vols., "Camp Bill Serwell, [Carter Creek, KY], April 18, 1862", in part: "…we are still at Carter's Creek guarding the railroad bridge. We have a fine time here. We drill two hours a day…I was sergeant of the guard last Monday…this is pretty warm weather down here. The woods is getting green. The corn is planted…the cotton is a planting. The darkies has to go in or get clubbed. I saw an old wench plowing with a very yoke of oxen and an old wooden plow. What a sight for a farmer. There is some mightily fine looking gals about here…they come to camp to use us sometimes. They think we are mighty fine looking fellows particularly Capt. Cummins company…we have a fiddle in our tent and a cordian so we have music by the yard…last night we had a big spree. There is a contraband in Company I and after all the rest had danced the darkie whose name is Moses danced and he took the prize. He is right smart…there is 5 n[egros] for every white person here…it is the opinion of every person here that the war is drawing pretty near a close…Samuel Fleming, Co. A, 78th Regt. P. V…in care of Col. Sirwell…". Addressed to James C. Carnahan who later enlisted as drummer in the 78th but died of disease shortly after the battle of Murfreesboro.
