Union soldier's war-date letter, 1p. folio, written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., Louisville, KY, Nov. 16, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…we have had another awful hard march since I last wrote. We started from Nicholasville last Tuesday…and got here last night having traveled every day for five days. The distance was ninety miles over turnpike roads. My feet got quite sore otherwise I stood the march very well…I don't know where we are to go from here…I suppose away down in Dixie…Louisville is a large handsome city. The largest place in Kentucky…M. Hickman." The original transmittal cover is included. Minor paper loss at folds, else VG
