War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written, on 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery regimental stationery, by Pvt. David W. Sharpe, Co. B, 1st Conn. Hvy. Art., Fort Barnard, Mar. 1, 1862, in part: "…I have just come off guard duty…several sergeants and corporals…have gone home recruiting to fill up the regt to 1889 men. All who enlist are sworn in for three years…they will have to stay and serve their three years out after we have gone home…I should [advise] all that have not already enlisted, no to enlist. I do not mean by this to say that I am tired of soldering, but I had rather go on and do what fighting we have to do and come home…even if I get a bullet through me…we drill twice a day now with our rifles in the forenoon and on the guns in the fort in the afternoon. The gun which I drill on is an eight inch howitzer which throws a sixty-four pound ring grape and canister shot…D. W. Sharpe." VG
