War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. David W. Sharpe, Co. B, 1st Conn. Hvy. Art., "Camp near Gaines Mill, [Va.], June 18, 1862," in part: "…all the divisions have crossed the Chickahominy [river] but ours (which is the reserve)…you have heard about a small body of rebel cavalry getting in the rear of us. Our division was called out and we followed them as far as Trunstal Station, five miles from White House and then came beck to our camp…I shall send a Confederate postage stamp…which I bought off one of the rebel prisoners we took at Hanover. I must stop writing and clean my rifle to have it pass inspection…Dave." VG
