War-date Union soldier's Seven Days Campaign letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. David W. Sharpe, Co. B, 1st Conn. Hvy. Art., "Camp near Harrison's Landing, [Va.], July 12 -16, 1862," in part: "We are still lying in camp two miles from Harrison's Landing and we expect to place our battery in position near here to…protect the Landing…President Lincoln was here day before yesterday….[July 14th]…I am on guard today over the magazine which has nearly five hundred rounds of shells and cartridges in it…there will probably be a little fighting…in sometime…you ask how we retreated with our siege guns from Richmond. We fought with them one day and fell back the next having to stop every little ways and pull them out of the mud holes with drag ropes. We didn't have mules enough to haul them all and had to draw two howitzers several miles by hand. But we got them all here without losing a gun…David…". VG
