C.], Oct. 28, 1862, in part: "…after an awful see voyage we have arrived safely at New Bern…we had been out more than two hours from Boston when we ran into a schooner which broke the yard arm of the Mississippi…we did not learn how much injury was done to the small craft. The same night a man fell from the rigging which caused his death next day…we arrived at Holmes Hole…and staid until the Merrimac came up which was early in the evening when we started again…we came in sight of land…on…the 26th. The guns of Fort Macon presented rather a savage appearance as we sailed along within rather we went aground in the harbor of Beaufort…we took the cars for this place which is about 40 miles from where we landed…we came on open cars…the first place we came through was Morehead City which consists of a dozen houses, as many black inhabitants as you can have…the railroad route [was] laid through a swamp with occasionally a settlement. It [is] a dreary looking country. We are now about 1/2 mile from the city in tents…any quantity of black people visit us today…the companies are divided to…six tents. The Halifax boys in one, Hanson in another…direct Co. A, Third Reg. Mass. Vol….Morton…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG
