War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sgt. John E. Cram, Co. B, 11th New Hampshire Vols. [later lieutenant; severely WIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64], Lexington, KY, May 5, 1863, in part: "….we started from Winchester…and marched about twelve…miles…we are on a one hundred & sixty miles march…to Cumberland Gap…we have quite a job before us…[Tuesday evening]…we are now eight miles this side of Lexington…a great battle is going on at Fredericksburg, Va…Genl. Hooker is getting the better say the rebs…perhaps it is well we are not there…if ever this war is settled I mean to go over that ground again & over the hills that pour the shot & shell into us…John E.
