War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sgt. John E. Cram, Co. B, 11th New Hampshire Vols. [later lieutenant; severely WIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64], "near Lancaster, KY, May 10, 1863", in part: "…we got our breakfast and then started back on the same road and are now encamped on the same ground…we have heard glorious news…Richmond is taken by Genl. Stoneman and Genl. Dix…it will be a awful blow to the Southern Confederacy…next will come Charleston and Vicksburg and then they are done with…Orrin [B. Cram, KIA Wilderness, Va. 5/6/64] is getting better…he rode on the Ambulance wagon most of the way…[Jacob] Francis Fullonton has been rather unwell & has been behind most all of the time…I have not seen him for three days. He is to lazy to march in my opinion. He is the Capt's waiter…& when we get into camp he is not there to do anything. I was talking to the Capt. about him…& the Capt said there was just one thing that ailed him & that was that he was good for nothing…the Capt. says all he has him for [as] his waiter is…for his mother's sake…our First Lieut. (Morrison [WIA Fredericksburg, Va. 12/13/62 & severely Bethesda Church, Va. 6/3/64] of Deerfield) is pretty lame…when we have a good days march we can tell the tough ones the next day. I have always have kept up…and am always found at the head of the company…Your son, John E. Cram." VG
