A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 7pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Lafayette, Tenn., Jan. 13, 1863, his first to his father, in part: "…I…was at Oxford and we left there the next day and went twelve miles farther south…next morning I was detailed to go with the wagons back to Holly Springs 40 miles…after rations. I was in Holly Springs just two days before the Rebels burnt the commissary …when I come back our company had been sent off to guard a railroad bridge…I did not get any chance to write until the railroad had been tore up…we have got back to Tenn. again. We have been down in Mississippi seventy five miles. We were within one days march of Grenada and have done marching & counter marching enough to take us to the Gulf. We passed through LaGrange last Friday…we come on Saturday to Moscow…we are now within 30 miles of Memphis…some say that we are going to Memphis to take the boats for Vicksburg…others say that the war is over and we are going home…we got two hundred and thirty recruits for the regiment…also a brass band and a chaplain. About half the recruits are drafted men…we have now one of the best regiments in the western army. You wrote that Uncle Abram [possibly 52 year-old Abram Fulton 37th Iowa] and Henry were in the army. Do you know what regiment…I saw Calvin Simons. He is in the sixteenth Iowa [actually 13th Iowa]…Will[iam A. J.] Bell is in a battery. He was taken out of the regiment …he has a good horse to ride…he is what they call a powder monkey to handle cartridges. Harve Simmons is a good fellow…he will work and fix up our bunk and carry wood…he will do anything for me but he hates to see any of the other boys warm at a fire that he builds and if he gets anything good to eat he will throw it away before he would give it to another…I have never been sick…never missed duty. I have been on every march and scout the reg. has been on…I have been on extra duty twice…once for sleeping until after roll call…and once for missing dress parade…Henry H. Fulton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
