A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Vicksburg, [Miss.], June 14, 1863, to his father, in part: "I received your welcome letter…was sorry that you are so uneasy about me. I don't want you to think so much about me. I know I am in danger…when I come into the army I expected to fight…I think I will never be in more or as much danger as I have been. We are not in as much danger here as you suppose. We are well fortified as the rebels and fight behind breastworks. They do but very little cannonading. They have been throwing shells yesterday and today but have done no damage…yet. We are camped…three fourths of a mile from the fortifications…we have to go to the rifle pits about every fourth day…two of the company bet us were killed yesterday. I am sorry the people of the north are so divided on this war…these secret societies are a curse whether Union League of Knights of the Golden Circle. I wished when I saw our dead and dying on the field of battle that they were some of the rampant abolitionists that have done so much to inaugurate this war…I wish…they…should visit the fields of battle and the hospitals…and see the missing they have helped bring about. Perhaps some of these men you speak about will have a chance to face the enemy . This war is not over yet…Dan Hank's boys cant all escape. I want you to keep Newton [his brother] out of the army…I am willing to fight as long as there is an armed rebel…I would not be satisfied if he was here…Henry." An original "DUE 3" transmittal cover is included. VG
