A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Vicksburg, [Miss.], Aug. 20, [1863], in part: "…I have been detailed on the Hospital Boat Nashville…and have not been well since..I had something like the erysipelas in my head. It was very painful, but has got well. Before it got well I got the neuralgia in my left knee, but that is better and now I have the ague. I have had two shakes but I think with quinine and whiskey I will zoo get over it. Joe McClintick and Doty's boys are on this boat. They are very good to me and get me everything nice to eat…the steamer City of Madison blowed up yesterday while laying at the wharf. They were loading her with ammunition to send down the river when it took fire by some means…I never heard such an explosion before. I thought some magazine had blowed up. She was blowed all to atoms. There were men thrown up in town a hundred yards from the boat. The number of lives lost is not known but is from fifty t one hundred. The steamer Ed Walsh laying along side of the Madison was badly injured. Her whole side was blown in and several persons injured. I heard George Weaver was dead…direct Floating Hospital, Nashville, Vicksburg., Miss without Regt…Henry Fulton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
