A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Hospital Boat Nashville, Vicksburg, Miss., Sept. 7, [1863], in part: "…if I ever do get out of the army I don't know whether I will ever get civilized again…I would rather work with broom corn than anything else…I would make a poor hand now. I blistered my hands rowing a skiff ten minutes. I am still on the boat and may stay here sometime. I have been detailed by Gen. Grant but I suppose I could get off if I wished but this is an easier place than in the Regt…after I come on the boat…I was first watchman and then I got sick…I am now post master. I attend to all the mail for the boat…I also carry all orders. I have a nice little mule to ride…I see that you are opposed to the administration. Well I don't think it displays much wisdom…the surest and shortest way to peace is to fight in out…the South look on all Vallandigham men as their friends…discord in the north is all that sustains rebellion…we expect to hear of our troops occupying Charleston…then they [have] to fight for Richmond…soon…in the[ir] wake…Mobile [will fall]. I hope you will not vote for Vallandigham…I will vote for Brough to oppose Val if nothing else…I will vote for everything to end the war…Doty's boys have left here and gone to the Regt…Morgan Beaver goes to the Invalid Corps…he has to walk on crutches…he will discharged…Henry H. Fulton. VG
