A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Vicksburg, Miss., Nov. 14, [1863], in part: "…we still work on the fortifications, work eight hours a day…we get two rations of whiskey a day while on the forts and some give their rations to others and they get drunk throw clods, fight and carry on business for themselves. Logan reviewed the 3rd division and took leave of it yesterday he said he had commanded it for nearly two years, had been in thirteen battles…that we had all passed through the same dangers and vicissitudes and to part now was like parting with his family. He said the history of the 3rd division was already written…Gen. Logan takes command of the 15th Army Corps General Sherman's old command. Sherman commands the department of the Tennessee Grant's command. The 76th Ohio are in the 15th Army Corps. They have gone to Chattanooga and if another fight comes off there they may expect to play their part if Logan has command. There is no such thing as backing out with him. He wanted to take this division with him but Grant said we had done enough for the present…Gen. Leggett commands the division now. He used to command our brigade. He is our old Col…three of our boys that were wounded and taken prisoner at raymond came back a day or two ago…our paroled boys are all here now but two and one of them was shot in the knee so that he cant straighten his leg. He has been transferred to the Invalid Corps the other is an Irishman. He deserted from Camp Chase and went to Canada…do you think there is any prospect of the war closing. Did you read the speech of Gen. Grant published in the Commercial of the 5th of Nov. to the people of Arkansas…Henry." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
