Union soldier's war-date battle letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., "Before Vicksburg, May 27, 1863", to his wife, in part: "…I have had no time…to write…since the 1st of May, commencing on that day at Port Gibson I have been in six battles, but have escaped so far without a scratch. Our regiment has lost about fifty in killed and wounded in the different battles. Jim Wicker & Sam Garnett were both severely wounded about a week ago, but are doing well. They are able to be around. We thrashed the rebs awfully every time they made a stand until they retreated into Vicksburg, their stronghold. Here they are giving us a hard fight. They have already killed and wounded not less than five or six thousand of our men. There is no telling when or how this battle will end…let mother and the girls know that I am well when you get this…I have no time now to write to them…M. Hickman." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG
