Union soldier's war-date letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., "Rear of Vicksburg, June 11, 1863", to his wife, in part: "…I have nothing…important to write…than to say that I am still in the land of the living. I keep pretty well considering what we have to go through…Vicksburg is not yet taken…there is [not] much prospect of its being soon. We have made no attempt upon the place since I last wrote…but are closely besieging it intending, I suppose, to storm the rebs out…I hope this is the intention of our head commanders as I would rather take them by storming than by fighting them…M. Hickman." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
