A great war-date Vermont home front letter, 1p. 8vo., written by a certain "L. D. Herrick", W. Randolph, [VT], July 10, 1864 to Rev. H. A. Hazen, in part: "…about your classmates…the Rebellion found Solon in practice of medicine in N. Orleans and Green a hardware merchant in the same city both boarding at the same Hotel-chums as ever. Solon soon entered the Confederate service surgeon of a Louisiana Regt and Green as a Lieut. In the fall of 1862 Solon was appointed Fleet Surgeon at Mobile and was there so engaged when I last heard from him a few weeks since. I last heard from Green by way of some of our Randolph boys of the 8th Vt. Reg while prisoners of war with the Rebels in Louisiana and while so imprisoned were in charge of their old townsman this same Barney Green then Capt. This was the beginning of 1863…L. D. Herrick." The original stamped transmittal cover is occluded.
