A heartfelt Union soldier's mother's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by "Mrs. Mary Conaway", Madison, Ind., Feb. 20, 1863 to Surgeon Almice F. Quinby concerning her strickened son, in part: "…with the greatest of thanks I seat myself…to inform you that I received your very kind…letter which reached my hand on the 19th. I no not how to be thankful enough to you…for the favor which you have done me in informing me of my son being in your hospital sick. It was a pang to my distressed hart when I Recd. it. I hope my son will recover from his sickness and be brought home to me once more. It was the first time I have heard from him since the battle of Murfreesborogh…I was very uneasy. I had understood he was wounded. Little did I think my son was so far from me as he is…perhaps I never shall see him again…kind sir I will trust to your goodness in taking care of him. If you bring him from his bed of affliction and raise him you will be rewarded for it. If not in this world you shall in the next. My son is very young. He is entirely too young to be in the service. He is only in 16th year and besides a very delicate child. He never had much health and he went against my will. King Sir I think you could do more with Governor Morton of our state in getting him a discharge than any one else [and] as…I suppose. Kind sir you would do me a great favor if you would get him discharged for he is not able to re in the service…please answer this and let me no how he gets along and if you think he will recover…Mrs. Mary Conaway."
