War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Thomas J. Bond, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Vols., Chattanooga, [Tenn.], Sept. 29, 63, in part: "I thought I would give you a few particulars of our fight. We left Crawfish Springs about dusk and marched all night…[we] halted about daylight…the enemy attacked us about 9 o'clock…we engaged them and drove them about 1/2 mile and laid down so as to avoid the bullets…then we formed along the fence and had not been there long till the enemy numbering 5000 strong came out of the cornfield and drove us back in disorder for there was none but our Regt engaged at the time… A. D. Searles was killed and W. Mc[?] and R. Brown was wounded in the charge and then we drawer off till night and [then] went at it again and fought till after dark…quit till morning…Sunday morning [we] went at it again and fought till after dark…then we fell back…[we] lost some 12 men as prisoners and one wounded. It was a continual roar of musketry from morn till night and at night we fell back 5 miles…on Monday we had a small skirmish and at night we fell back to this place where we have built fortifications…they do not bother us much now only picket firing. You can see the Reb camps from here. The Rebs supposed to number 125,000 and that is twice our number. I will send you a couple of pictures that I got the time of the fight…my knee has plaid out…T. J. Bond." Some spotting and soiling, else VG
