A good war-date manuscript poem, 1p. 12mo., entitled: "Just Before the Battle Mother, from the Adjutant of the 4th Iowa to his mother", ca. 1863, reading, in part: "…Just Before the Battle Mother. I am thinking most of you…with the enemy in view. Comrades brave around me lying; filled with thoughts of home and God…farewell mother you may never press me to your heart again…I am numbered with the slain…Oh! I long to see you mother and the loving ones at home, but I'll never leave our Banner…tell the traitors all around you that their cruel words we know. In every battle kill our soldiers…hark, I hear the bugle sounding. Tis the signal for the fight…hear the battle cry of freedom. How it swells upon the air. Oh! you will rally round our standard…we'll perish nobly there…farewell mother…". Folds, else VG
