In part, “My youngest son Alonzo was taken prisoner on the 11th of April last…and has been confined since his capture on Board the U.S. Ship Vermont – now lying at Port Royal. A few days since by “Flag of Truce” I received a letter from him. IN that letter he thought that I might be able to respond through the “Flag of Truce” … He with eight other pickets were taken on Edisto Island the 11th of April, betrayed by a negro surrounded by fifty-nine of the enemy, these nine pickets were handcuffed and taken to the gunboat…Any effort made by you for the release of my son and the other young gentlemen will place me under grateful obligation to the son of My Father earliest friend.”
