Union soldier's war-date letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., New Orleans, La., May 20, 1864, to his wife, in part: "…I have been busy…cleaning up an old gun…I was…sorry to hear that Doc. Wicker continued so low. He was a good soldier…he is still at Columbus, Ky. He will not likely get to his Regt. for some time and may therefore miss many dangers and hardships by being away from it…I was very glad to hear …that Mr. Sturgis had abandoned the notion of going into the service again…[and that] there had been some Copperheads killed by the soldiers in the county. I was glad to hear of that. It serves them right. I would rather kill a Copperhead than a rebel…the news from old Grant is glorious…Richmond will fall this time and the rebs be driven from Virginia …Grant can do up the job if any body can…M.
