War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Hd. Qrs. 2nd Army Corps Near Petersburg, Va., Aug. 30, 1864", in part: "…we are now drawing potatoes, onions [gives a full list of food here]…only those who have subsisted for a time on hard tack, pork and coffee can appreciate the change. It is very quiet in front just now and there has been less firing today…we may have a considerable cannonade yet…I understand that a law has recently passed allowing no soldier to reenlist who has over sixty days to serve and weever then allowing no furloughs. I do not think they will get a very large number of Veteran recruits from the Gallant 126th…Company G has not been mustered and consequently will to get pay next pay day…the captain…is absent in the hospital…C. Pasko is also in hospital at City Point and our loss of two men at Ream's Station on Thursday last leaves but two or three men in the Co….does Lieut. [Martin V.] Stanton's [MWIA Petersburg, 6/16/64]widow still reside in town…if he does I wish you would be so kind as to procure a copy of his photograph…politics seems to be the absorbing topic of conversation at present…father, I presume, goes it strong for Old Abe. The feeling here is still greatly in his favor but there has been a great falling off within the last two months. For the men who are buying Negro substitutes from the Southern States occupied by our armies the most unbounded contempt is felt by every soldier. It is an insult to every volunteer to have such men sent to fight with them. The North never has done its duty in this war and there is not much prospect that it ever will…George S. Youngs." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. A bit light, else VG.
