War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. David W. Sharpe, Co. B, 1st Conn. Hvy. Art.,"In front of Petersburg, [Va.], July 22, 1864," in part: "…I rec'd. your letter [while] we were at battery No. 1 on the James river and had three twenty pdr Parrott guns. Since then we have come here and are in position on the right of Gen. Warren's 5th Corps and directly in front of the city. From yesterday morning to this morning we fired ninety rounds of percussion shell, during the night firing once every five minutes. We have a battery of six thirty pdr. Rodman guns. We are about 3500 yards from the picket line and 450 from the rebel batteries. Their batteries do not trouble us…but their sharpshooters fire at us once in a while. Grant has had their principle forts undermined and will blow them up when he gets ready to make a general attack. We are getting very small rations now…the Sanitary Commission has given us one barrel of potatoes and gives us pickles once in a while. Officers go to them and get anything they want…David." VG
