War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Joseph Leonard Follet, Medal of Honor receipient, 1pp. quarto, Battery G, 1st Missiouri Artillery, Lookout Mountain, Georgia, December 31, 1864, addressed to Lt. Henry M. Ball Judge Advocate G.C.M. Convened at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and reads “I have the honor to report that the charges & specifications in the cases of Pvts. John Gasson & John OBrien of this Battery ‘G’ 1st Mo. Lgt Artillery, Vet. Vols were withdrawn by permission of Genl. Steedman, some two months ago. Lieut Gustavus Schuler who preferred these charges having resigned & returned to his State. Should this statement prove unsatisfactory. I have the honor to await your further orders...” Docketed on verso by Lt. and Judge Advocate H.M. Ball, stating that if the facts are personally known to Lt. Follett the proceedings will be suspended. Very good condition. Joseph Follet (1843-1907) enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Missouri Infantry in September 1861. He served from through the entire war, being twice wounded in action [at Farmington, Miss. 5/9/62 & New Madrid, Missouri 3/2/62], serving under Generals Sherman, Pope, King and Steedman, and as a nineteen year old he was awarded the Medal of Honor at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, on October 8, 1862, after charging a battery. His citation reads "At New Madrid, MO., remained on duty though severely wounded. While procuring ammunition from the supply train at Stone River, Tenn., Follett was captured, but made his escape, secured the ammunition, and in less than an hour from the time of his capture had the batteries supplied." He later had extensive service during the Indian Wars era.
