Congratulatory letter, titled "General Orders No. 1", from Brigadier General Samuel Carter, Headquarters Calvary Forces, In the field Richmond, KY, January 9, 1863, 2pp. The order, being a copy and in the hand of Isaac D. Landis of the 9th Penn. Calvary, congratulates the troops that accompanied him in his expedition in Eastern Tennessee. The letter thanks the 9th Penn. Calvary, 7th Ohio Calvary, and 2nd Michigan Calvary. In addition to the letter of congratulations, Landis writes a half page note to his father. The order reads "In taking leave of the Officers and Soldiers comprising the Expeditionary force into E. Tenn., The Genl commanding it desires to thank you in his own name and that of our common Country for the faithful manner in which you performed the difficult duties assigned you. In 20 days you marched 470 miles 170 of which were in the enemy's country, without tents and with only such rations as you could carry in your haversacks. In every instance when you met the Rebels you capture, destroyed or put them to flight. You burned two most important R.R. Bridges on the E. Tenn. & Va. R.R. at a time when "it was taxed to its upmost capacity" - took some 400 prisoners, killed a number, destroyed 600 to 700 stand of arms, a locomotive, tender and car, besides considerable amount of valued stores. You moved day and night, exposed to rain, snow and bitter cold and much of the time with only such scant rations as you could procure in your rapid march. You bore such hardships and privations as few of our soldiers have been called upon to encounter, without a murmur or a single word of complaint. You have acquitted yourselves like worthy soldiers of the Republic. "Through the Lord you have done valiantly". Your Country is proud of your achievement. To your valor and endurance are due the success of our undertaking. With such men few things are impossible. We drop a tear to the memory of our brave comrades who sleep in the valley of E. Tenn., and tender to their surviving friends our heartfelt sympathies. Let it be our pride to emulate their heroism and devotion to our most glorious and holy cause - In future let your conduct as soldiers be in keeping with your recent glorious deeds. Others will respect you all the more for having belonged to the Expeditionary force to E. Tenn. Soldiers again the Gen Commanding thanks to you, By Command of Brig. Gen. Carter, C.W. Cenan A.A.G., Offiial C.L. Walker Col. 10th KY Cavalry, Ninth Regt, Pa. Vol. Cavly". Landis then writes on the third page to his father "Dear father, Enclosed you will find the copy of an order from Brigadier General Carter to the troops that accompanied him in his Expedition to E. Tenn. Oof which there was four companies of the 7th Ohio Cav & Companies of the 2nd Michigan Cav and 10 Co of our regt. He give us a good bit of praise but not more than we deserve. We are getting paid off today they are paying Co. C now. You will see by Gideons letter that we are again under marching orders. Where we are to go to is more than we can tell yet. You may show the enclosed order to Curriden and if he thinks it proper he may publish it in the news. I must bring this letter to a close to send it in todays mail. You may delay sending that box until we write to you again. Affectionately your son, Isaac D. Landis". Excellent content, and a great association piece to the letter listed in the catalog from Landis to his parents describing the very battle that General Carter is referring to.
