Written by Isaac D. Landis, 9th Pennsylvania Calvary (92nd Volunteers) to his father. Landis served with the 9th Penn. Calvary from October 1861 until July 1865, and was wounded in Georgia in November 1864. This excellent two page letter, dated October 15, 1864, was written from Whiteville, Tennessee and recounts the fighting in La Fayette, Georgia where the 9th Tenn. engaged the Rebels three days earlier, in part: "I hasten to announce the arrival of Col. Jordan and the squad he had to Nashville….they brought in 307 men. We now have 940 men in the field. Our aggregate strength now is 1310 enlisted men. The Col has this night wrote to the Governor of Penna recommending certain persons for commissions in which Gideon is included. He is recommended as 2nd Lt. of Co. C while I am to be 1st Lieut of Co. E. We are on pretty heavy duty at this time. Half (or more) of the command are out scouting all the time. The Rebels have been advancing on Chattanooga. They captured Dalton and Resaca day before yesterday. Sherman is moving up on their rear. Co. D under command of Capt M. O'Reilly were scouting in the direction of La Fayette a few days ago. On arriving at La Fayette he charged into the town was not a little surprised to find the 4th Confederate and 6th Georgia Calvary waiting for him. They immediately charged him front and flank, however he repulsed them and held his ground until they tried to move on his rear when he ordered an retreat. At that instant they again charged his little band of 32 men. They kept up a running fight for four miles, when they gave up chase. Our loss was seven killed and 9 wounded or missing the Rebels had 4 or 5 killed. La Fayette does not appear to be a very healthy place for our regiment. I think we will have to burn that place yet. The authorities at Chattanooga have a big scene on. I cannot tell what will be the military results of the next few days….". The Gideon that is mentioned is the Isaac Landis' brother.
