War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John R. Carnahan, Co. K, 67th Penn. Vols., "Camp near Burksville, Va. April 16, 1865", to his father, in part: "…am still with the hospital Department. I have been in no fighting but have done some very hard marching. I suppose you have heard all about our campaign so far & how it resulted. We now hold Richmond, Petersburg & have captured Lee & his entire command. [We] are now encamped for a few days resting ourselves & teams. We have come back about 45 miles from where Lee surrendered & are at the junction of the South Side Railroad with the Richmond & Danville Road. I cannot say what we are going to do next or where we will got but will wait patiently & see. You wanted to know if I could tell you anything about Israel Gibson his brother-in-law captured in May 1864 and sent to Andersonville]. I have not heard anything about him and I cannot give you any information concerning him…John R. Carnahan." Written for Carnahan by another soldier whose does not need his spelling corrected. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor spotting, else VG
