A good war-date Iowa civilian letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Fanny Wood, on behalf of her family, Bellevue, Jackson Co. Iowa, Feb. 3, [1865], to Mattahew Carnahan, in part: "…there is a good many of the boys around here has got home. Their time is out. Our John is still in the service. He is with General Sherman…was in Savannah but had marching orders. He said they supposed for Richmond. John is driving team. He was detailed to drive team last February…he is in the Fifteenth Corps. There has been quite an excitement about draft down hear since the last call. The men is getting tired of fighting for Brother Sambo. Thare has been lots of men going to Davenport to be exempted but very few of them was exempt but it so happened that Iowa is clear this call. She has filled her quota. The governor had some regiments mustered in and credited to Iowa so the Democrats or Copperheads, as there called, will be free this call. Thare was one draft in Iowa this fall and some of them give leg bail…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover. Some of her mild phonetic spelling has been corrected.
