War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Private David W. Moser, 199th Penn. Vols., "Camp near Appomattox Court House, Va., April 13, 1865," in part: "…I am well and harry and dirty and lousy, but I am very thankful to god that he saft me out of danger…[I] pray to go that this war is over…I think it is as we captured General Le and his whole army …we broke camp on the evening of the 27 of March in front of Richmond and went to this side of Petersburg. We got there on…the 28…and state thare thil the 2 day of April than the fiting in front of Petersburg come off, but I was not in that fight as I was on picket but our pickets had a sharp skirmish with the Rebels that night…the Regt was in the fight and all the Hyde Park boys cum out all safe wis the exception of David Jones…he lost his right leg above the knee. I seen him a few hours after he got it off but had no time to talk with him. He was not in our company but…in Company I…Fret Jones…slightly wounded in his shoulder …in the morning of the 3…we started after Old Lee and we was skirmishing with his rear guard most all the way till Sunday on the 9th of this [month] than we cached the old fox at last but he fought till the last minute. We had a fight with him on Sunday last and all us Hyde Park boy is all right…I think there will be no more fighting as we got the old Fox and all his young ones…I think the thing is played with all the Rebels. We had a very hard march. I was near played out sometimes but I am all rite and glad that things turned out as they did…we…no male since we left Petersburg…direct as follows: D. W. Moser, Co. G, 199 Regt. P. V., 1 Brigade, 1 Division, 24 Corps, Washington in care of Captain Waites." Moser's German dialect phonetic spelling has mostly been corrected. Light stains, else VG
